Embrace your silly self

🔬 Starting a new role can feel like you’re under a microscope, with every move being watched and judged. But worrying about how others perceive you is a huge distraction that takes your focus away from what truly matters and stops you from fully embracing your new responsibilities.

This photo of sidewalk silliness - captured by my daughter - reminds me that obsessing about how we look to others can detract from our happiness, sense of belonging, and alignment with our purpose and values. This can erode your performance.

But it's only human to feel this way! So, here are five tips to help you stay focused on what’s important and de-emphasize the imagined judgments of others:

🎯 Set Clear, Personal Goals: Define what success looks like for you in this new role. This will give you a clear direction and something meaningful to focus on beyond others’ opinions.

🧘 Focus on Your Breathing : In moments of self-doubt during a meeting or conversation, take a few deep breaths to center yourself. This simple act can help ground you and bring your attention back to the present moment.

👂🏻Shift to Active Listening : Redirect your focus from how you’re being perceived to truly listening to the speaker. Engaging deeply with what others are saying can help you stay present and reduce self-conscious thoughts.

❓Ask Clarifying Questions : If you find yourself worrying about how you come across, switch gears by asking thoughtful questions. This not only demonstrates your engagement but also shifts your focus from yourself to the conversation.

🌟 Visualize a Positive Outcome: When you start to fixate on others' perceptions, take a brief moment to visualize a successful and positive outcome for the meeting or interaction. This can boost your confidence and help reframe your mindset.

And, finally, trust that the most meaningful and impactful work comes from being true to yourself, not from worrying about others’ opinions. Embrace your unique self and you'll shine brighter! 🌞
